Jumping Through the Virginia Regions

To play this activity you need the class region map, a jump rope for each student and music. This activity can be played as a whole class and create a school competition between classes or create teams within a class. The goal is to accumulate jumps to make it through all the regions in VA. Each jump counts as 1/100 of a mile therefore, for a student to go one mile they must jump a total of 100 times. Modification: The teacher can change this number to 1/50 or 50 jumps to go a mile, 1/10 or 10 jumps to go a mile, or 5280 jumps which would equal one mile. The number depends on the skill and endurance level of your students.

  1. Explain to the students how many jumps would equal a mile. Provide 4 to 5 minutes at the beginning of each class in which students could accumulate jumps.
  2. The students would then report how many jumps they were able to complete as a class and then mark that spot on the chart.
  3. The teacher would need a ruler to mark the spot. (There is a key on the map to measure distance.)
  4. The teacher could post these on the gymnasium wall. To create a school competition, every class would have their own chart, the teachers would have a chart, and the administrators would have a chart. The students could compare how close they are in their jumps to other classes.

*The teacher could also complete this same activity but have small teams within a class. In this case the students would accumulate jumps as a team. There is a recording sheet for each team to be able to document their jumps.
