Dr. Kristen St. John is an Associate Professor in the Geology and Environmental Science Department at James Madison University in Harrisonburg , VA. She obtained her BS in geology at Furman University in 1992 and her MS and PhD in geology at Ohio State University in1995 and 1998, respectively. Kristen's primary research program in is marine sedimentology and paleoceanography. Her research focuses on reconstructing Cenozoic ice-rafted debris histories. She sailed as a sedimentologist on two Ocean Drilling Program expeditions in the North Atlantic and has worked on samples or data sets from North Pacific and Antarctic cores. Most recently she served as a sedimentologist for the IODP Arctic Coring Expedition 302. Through her post-expedition research Kristen is reconstructing the Cenozoic ice-rafting history of the central Arctic . Kristen is a member of U.S. Advisory Committee on Scientific Ocean Drilling, an associate editor of the Journal of Geoscience Education, and Vice President of the Geoscience Education Division of the Geological Society of America. Last year, Kristen participated in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program pilot teacher education program titled the " School of Rock Expedition " as a professor and plans to play the same role this summer for the first IODP Gulf Coast Repository School of Rock teacher short course.
