Meteorites are separated into three categories, stony, stony-irons and irons. These classifications are based on the meteorite's composition. The stony group is subdivided into chondrites and achondrites, based on the presence or absence of chrondrules, which are spherical bodies that can grow to a few mm in diameter. So far over 200 different minerals have been found in meteorites. Some of these minerals only exist in small amounts or they are found in rare meteorite types.
