History
The history of remote sensing's applications to oceanography is completely intertwined with the history of remote sensing. All advancements that have been made in remote sensing of oceanography are considered advancements in the field of remote sensing.
Remote Sensing projects with applications to Oceanography include:
- 1946-1954 -- Rocketry -- The V-2 and Viking missions took pictures of the earth's surface (including the oceans) from space.
- 1964 -- WHOI --Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
A program dedicated to advancing the basic understanding of the oceans.
- 1966 -- NASA's Earth Resources Program sponsors the SPOC
- 1980 -- IDOE
- 1987-1990 -- Japan launches its first and second marine observations satellites
- 1993 -- SeaWiFs -- Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor
Satellite that investigates the role carbon in the oceans plays throughout land, sea and life.
