The ISAT Internship

An internship is any work experience that allows you to practice and enhance the skills you are developing as an ISAT student. Ideally, the internship experience will complement your academic training and give you an introduction to a specific career or field of interest. An internship can provide a unique way to find out the difference between what you think a job is and what it really is, and since almost all ISAT internships are paid, you can make some money while learning! It is recommended that every ISAT student complete an internship.

Why Do I Need One?

" If you want to get a job after college, get an internship. It's the most bankable credential you can put on your resume."

This comment by Maury Hanigan, president of Hanigan Consulting Group in New York echoes employers' comments nationwide. Additionally, the real world experience provides a concrete foundation for you to make decisions regarding your remaining academic goals. By "trying out" a career field, you may refocus your major or course selection to optimize your college experience or what I learned in college, did prepare me for the real world!

Can I Receive Academic Credit for my Internship?

CS and GIS offer a formal internship program for college credit. However, ISAT does not offer a formal internship program at this time. ISAT independent studies can be based on internship projects (i.e. literature searches, information and data gathered). As an ISAT student you already have six (6) credits devoted to your Senior Thesis.

Comments from students regarding their internship experience:

Question:

Overall, was it a good intern experience that you would recommend for other ISAT students?

" Definitely, I had to contact environmental organizations so I got to make great contacts and it was good networking."

" It was a very good experience at a very good organization. I learned so much that I could never learn in a class room and got a taste for the corporate world. I would definitely recommend this for other ISAT students."

" The program is very valuable to get a better understanding of "real-world" work situations. I gained a better understanding of what is expected at the next level."
