Frequently Asked QuestionsDo I have a choice as to whether I pursue an internship? Yes. Internships are optional for ISAT and CS students; however, you are strongly advised to get an internship! In today's market, course-related experience while you are in school is priceless. For ISAT students, an internship can also set you up for your senior project topic. How do students receive college credit for their internship experience? CS offers a formal internship program for college credit. ISAT does not offer a formal internship program at this time. ISAT independent studies can be based on internship projects (i.e. literature searches, information and data gathered). As an ISAT student you already have six (6) credits devoted to your Senior Thesis. Can interns live at home while completing an internship? Yes, if you are fortunate enough to find a host organization or company in your hometown. Keep in mind that flexibility is often the key to the best career-related work opportunities. If you really must have an internship in your hometown . . . (1) See the Internship Coordinator to obtain a Chamber of Commerce listing of industries and businesses in your hometown and a list of alumni located in the region. The Coordinator will then work with you to develop a search strategy. (2) Talk with your parents early in the year. You will be surprised how many people they know and can network with to assist you. Just keep in mind that you are lowering your probability of success when you specify a small geographic region; be prepared to commute an hour if necessary. Will internships be paid? Pay depends on the internship host organization--many offer wages, salaries, stipends, or honorariums. Financial considerations are important. Please note there are excellent internships with well-known organizations, which are credit-only positions. Booz-Allen & Hamilton, Merillat Industries, and the National Forest Service have requested ISAT/CS students for credit-only internships in recent history. What you want is the EXPERIENCE! Can parents assist in getting internships for students? Sure! We appreciate parents finding internships for their students, and we
hope that these parents and students will work with the College to pursue opportunities
for other students in the future. Never underestimate your parents' contacts
or their friends' contacts.
